Note About Bilateral Factor
The bilateral factor is an important consideration in calculating disability ratings for veterans with disabilities affecting both sides of their body, such as both arms or both legs. This factor acknowledges that disabilities on both sides of the body can significantly amplify the overall impact on a veteran's ability to work, more so than the sum of each side considered separately. When applicable, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) adds an additional percentage to the combined disability rating to account for this increased impairment.
Essentially, after calculating the combined rating for all disabilities including bilateral conditions, the VA considers the bilateral factor by adding a certain percentage to reflect the compounded functional loss or increased severity when both limbs or paired organs are affected. This ensures that the rating more accurately represents the veteran's overall level of disability and acknowledges the extra challenges faced by veterans with bilateral disabilities in their daily activities and employment opportunities.
Bilateral factor is included in the above calculation.

VA Disability Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions
1. How does the VA combine multiple disability ratings?
The VA doesn't simply add your disability ratings together. Instead, they use a combined ratings table that accounts for your remaining efficiency after each disability. For example, if you have ratings of 30% and 20%, the VA considers that after the 30% disability, you have 70% efficiency remaining. The 20% rating is then applied to that remaining 70%, which equals 14%. So your combined rating would be 30% + 14% = 44%, which rounds to 40%. You can learn more about this calculation on our page about VA disability rating calculation.
2. Why doesn't my 70% and 50% rating equal 120%?
The VA uses the Combined Ratings Table rather than simple addition. This is because they consider each disability as affecting your remaining capacity after accounting for previous disabilities. If you have a 70% disability, the VA considers you to have 30% efficiency remaining. Your 50% disability is then calculated against that 30% remaining efficiency (50% of 30% = 15%), which gives you a combined rating of 70% + 15% = 85%, which rounds to 90%. You can learn more about this calculation on our page about VA disability rating calculation.
3. What is the bilateral factor and how does it affect my disability rating?
The bilateral factor applies when you have disabilities affecting both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles. The VA adds 10% of the combined value of these bilateral disabilities before continuing with the regular combining process. This additional percentage acknowledges that having similar disabilities on both sides of your body creates a greater overall impairment than would be reflected by simply combining the individual ratings.
4. How does the VA determine my final combined percentage after calculating all ratings?
After combining all your disability ratings (including any bilateral factor adjustments), the VA rounds the final percentage to the nearest 10%. For example, 64% would be rounded down to 60%, while 65% would be rounded up to 70%.
5. Can my combined VA disability rating ever exceed 100%?
No, your official combined VA disability rating cannot exceed 100%. However, you can receive additional compensation beyond the 100% rate through Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) if you have certain severe disabilities or combinations of disabilities that significantly impact your daily functioning.
6. How often are VA disability payment rates updated?
VA disability payment rates are updated annually to account for cost-of-living adjustments (COLA). These adjustments typically take effect on December 1st of each year and are reflected in the January payment. The adjustment percentage is based on the same COLA used for Social Security benefits.
7. If I have a 0% (non-compensable) disability rating, does it affect my overall combined rating?
A 0% rating by itself doesn't provide any monetary compensation. However, it's still important because it establishes service connection for that condition. If that condition worsens in the future, you can file for an increased rating. Additionally, a 0% rating may make you eligible for other VA benefits like healthcare for that specific condition.
8. How do dependents affect my VA disability compensation?
Veterans with a combined disability rating of 30% or higher receive additional compensation for dependents. Eligible dependents include spouses, children under 18, children between 18-23 who are attending school, and dependent parents. The exact amount of additional compensation varies based on your disability percentage and the number of dependents, as shown in our rate table.
9. What happens if the VA calculator shows I should be receiving more than I currently am?
If you believe you're entitled to a higher rate of compensation than you're currently receiving, you should first verify your calculated rating with the official VA Combined Ratings Table. If there appears to be a discrepancy, contact the VA directly through your eBenefits account, by calling 1-800-827-1000, or by consulting with a VA-accredited claims agent or Veterans Service Organization (VSO) representative. If you have already done so and had a claim for a higher rating denied, contact our team to assist with the appeals process.
10. How do I know which disability percentage to enter into the calculator?
You should enter the individual disability ratings as listed on your VA decision letter or as shown in your eBenefits or VA.gov account. Each service-connected condition will have its own percentage rating (e.g., PTSD 70%, back condition 40%, tinnitus 10%). Enter each of these individual ratings into the calculator rather than trying to estimate your own combined rating.
